Mumbai, June 6, 2025 – In a historic and emotional night at the Wankhede Stadium, the Royal Challengers (RC) clinched their first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 18 years, defeating the defending champions Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets in a gripping final match.
Led by captain Virat Kohli, who announced his final IPL appearance earlier this season, RC chased down a target of 176 with three balls to spare. Kohli’s composed 58 and a match-winning cameo by young sensation Aarav Sharma sealed the victory, sending fans into jubilation across Bengaluru and beyond.
The celebrations, however, were overshadowed by tragedy just moments after the match concluded.
Tragic Turn: Stampede Claims Lives
As thousands poured out of the stadium and fan zones across Mumbai, a stampede outside Gate 3 of Wankhede Stadium resulted in the tragic deaths of 8 spectators and left over 40 injured, according to preliminary reports from Mumbai Police and emergency services.
Eyewitnesses stated that a combination of poor crowd control, emotional euphoria, and a sudden surge in movement triggered the chaos. Security officials have launched an investigation into the incident, and the IPL Governing Council has promised full cooperation.
Condolences Pour In
RC’s win, long-awaited and cherished by millions, was immediately followed by expressions of grief and solidarity. Virat Kohli, in an emotional post-match address, said:
“This is a bittersweet night. We played for our fans, and today, some of those fans won’t return home. Our prayers are with their families. This trophy is for them too.”
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹2 lakh for those injured.
Looking Ahead
While the Royal Challengers’ historic title will be remembered as a crowning glory for the franchise and for Kohli’s IPL legacy, the 2025 season will also be marked by the sobering reminder of the need for better fan safety and stadium infrastructure.
As celebrations give way to mourning in parts of the cricketing world, the IPL community stands united — in triumph, and in tragedy.
