Location: Eastern Mediterranean Sea– Climate activist Greta Thunberg and her international aid crew were reportedly detained by Israeli naval forces earlier today while en route to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The vessel, part of a civil society mission organized by several European and Middle Eastern NGOs, was intercepted in what organizers claim was international waters.
The mission aimed to bring medical supplies, food, and water filtration systems to civilians in Gaza amid ongoing humanitarian concerns. Greta Thunberg, known globally for her climate advocacy, joined the mission to spotlight the intersection of environmental justice and human rights, emphasizing the severe ecological and humanitarian crisis in the region.
According to Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which coordinated the voyage, the ship was intercepted approximately 30 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza. “This is a clear violation of international maritime law,” said one of the organizers in a press release. “Our ship was unarmed, carrying only humanitarian supplies and international observers.”
Israeli authorities confirmed the interception but claimed the vessel was attempting to violate the naval blockade imposed on Gaza. “Any unauthorized maritime approach to the Gaza Strip is a security risk,” said an IDF spokesperson. The crew is reportedly being held for questioning at Ashdod port.
Human rights groups, UN representatives, and international diplomats have called for the immediate release of Thunberg and her crew, with some describing the action as “unjustified aggression against peaceful aid workers.”
Protests have already begun in several European capitals, demanding international accountability and immediate diplomatic action.
Thunberg’s family and legal team have not yet released a formal statement, but sources close to the crew say all members are safe and unharmed.
