In two seismic developments shaking the international community, a senior United Nations official has resigned to blow the whistle on an alleged secret plan involving nuclear weapons targeting Iran, while three Indonesian UN peacekeepers have been killed in southern Lebanon amid escalating Israeli military operations.

Mohamad Safa, who served as the Permanent Representative of the Patriotic Vision Organization to the UN for nearly twelve years, resigned from his position so he could leak information about an alleged UN plan to launch nuclear weapons into Iran. He stated that senior UN officials are not serving the body but rather a powerful lobby, and that he gave up his career to expose what he described as a potential crime against humanity.

Safa said he gave up his diplomatic career to prevent a “nuclear winter,” warning that “the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons must be taken very seriously.” He has since received death threats alongside his family following his public disclosures. The UN has not officially confirmed or responded to the allegations contained in the leaked documents.

Meanwhile, three Indonesian UN peacekeepers were killed within less than 24 hours in southern Lebanon, in two separate incidents amid ongoing attack by Israel.

Two Indonesian peacekeepers were killed when an explosion hit a UNIFIL logistics convoy, destroying their vehicle near Bani Hayyan in southern Lebanon. The incident occurred a day after another Indonesian Blue Helmet was killed when a projectile struck the mission’s base.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the incidents and called for a thorough and transparent investigation, reiterating its condemnation of Israel’s attacks in southern Lebanon and urging all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and cease attacks against civilian populations.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres declared that attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of international humanitarian law and may amount to war crimes, while UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix stated, “Peacekeepers must never be a target.”

The twin crises have sent shockwaves through the international diplomatic community, raising urgent questions about accountability, nuclear escalation, and the protection of those serving under the UN flag.
