As the US-Iran war enters a dangerous new phase, President Donald Trump is pushing hard toward a potential ground offensive — even as the human cost at home grows painfully visible.

The Pentagon is considering sending up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the Middle East to potentially support operations in Iran, a move aimed at giving President Donald Trump more military options. If approved, the force would likely include infantry and armored vehicles, joining the roughly 5,000 Marines and thousands of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division already ordered to the region.

The Pentagon is also developing military options for a “final blow” in Iran that could include the use of ground forces and a massive bombing campaign. Trump hasn’t made a final decision yet, but sources say he is ready to escalate if talks with Iran don’t yield tangible results soon.

However, America’s closest military partner appears to be pulling back from full ground commitment. At least 20 Israelis have been killed and more than 6,008 others wounded since the war began on February 28. Israel’s mounting military losses have visibly tempered its appetite for a boots-on-the-ground campaign inside Iran, with Israeli leaders focusing primarily on continued air operations rather than a ground push.

Back in America, the grief is no longer abstract. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance attended a solemn dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, as the flag-draped transfer cases of six US Army Reserve soldiers — killed in an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait — were carried home.

In total, thirteen American service members have died in the Iran war since strikes began on February 28. About 200 more US service members have been wounded in the conflict.

Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that Iranian forces are “waiting for the arrival of American soldiers on the ground” and vowed fierce resistance against any invasion attempt.

With diplomatic talks stalling, military deployments accelerating, and flag-draped coffins returning to American soil, the world watches anxiously as the region teeters on the edge of a full-scale ground war.
