In a significant diplomatic milestone, Pakistan has assumed the rotating chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July 2025. The development marks a key moment for Pakistan’s role in global diplomacy and peacekeeping efforts.

As chair, Pakistan will lead the Council’s proceedings, set the agenda, and oversee deliberations on global peace and security issues. The country’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram, will preside over key meetings and consultations throughout the month.

The Pakistani delegation has announced a focus on conflict resolution, regional stability, and counter-terrorism, along with attention to humanitarian crises and the protection of civilians in war zones. The UNSC is expected to deliberate on ongoing situations in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and Afghanistan during Pakistan’s tenure.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the appointment, calling it “a reflection of Pakistan’s commitment to global peace and multilateralism.” He added that Pakistan would “play a constructive and impartial role in promoting dialogue, diplomacy, and the rule of international law.”

This is not the first time Pakistan has held the chairmanship; however, analysts view this term as particularly important due to the shifting geopolitical landscape and the urgent need for diplomatic leadership on several fronts.

The international community will be closely watching Pakistan’s leadership at the helm of the world’s most powerful peace and security body.
