Rome, Italy – Across major Italian cities, thousands of local citizens have taken to the streets in mass protests after the Italian Government decided not to recognize Palestine as a sovereign nation. The demonstrations, marked by passionate chants and banners, highlight a growing public sentiment in support of Palestine and a call for change in Italy’s foreign policy.

Protesters argue that Italy must acknowledge the historical struggle of the Palestinian people, which many citizens say they have recently studied and understood in depth. Demonstrators carried Palestinian flags, raised placards demanding justice, and urged the Italian Government to withdraw any military support extended to Israel. The protests spread through Rome, Milan, Naples, Florence, and other cities, uniting diverse groups of people under a common demand: formal recognition of Palestine.

The protest movement has gained momentum as more than 150 countries worldwide have already agreed to recognize Palestine as a nation. Out of these, 10 countries have completed the process and granted full diplomatic recognition, while others are in various stages of the process. Italian citizens argue that Italy, as a member of the global democratic community, should not remain behind while much of the international community moves forward on this issue.

Organizers of the protest stated that their movement is not against Israel’s right to exist but against what they describe as “unbalanced policies” that deny Palestine the dignity of statehood. The protests remained largely peaceful, though heavily policed, as government officials acknowledged the demonstrations but maintained their stance on foreign policy.

With pressure mounting both domestically and internationally, Italy now faces increasing calls from its own citizens to reconsider its decision. Protesters have vowed to continue demonstrations until their demands for recognition of Palestine and withdrawal of military ties with Israel are heard at the highest levels.
