India has emerged as one of the top three countries globally in terms of artificial intelligence (AI) usage, according to recent industry data. However, experts point out that the primary factor behind this ranking is not technological advancement alone, but rather the nation’s massive population base.
The surge in AI usage spans across sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, e-commerce, and government services. From chatbots in customer support to machine learning models in crop prediction, AI is becoming a daily tool for millions of Indians.
Yet, analysts caution that India’s high rank is more reflective of the sheer number of users and devices rather than depth of innovation or AI research breakthroughs.
“India’s position among top AI-using countries is impressive but not surprising, given our 1.4 billion population. AI adoption is often driven by need and scale, and India has both,” said Radhika Menon, a technology policy expert at the Indian Institute of Digital Innovation.
While the numbers are significant, industry insiders believe that India’s next step must be to shift focus from high-volume usage to high-value innovation—investing in indigenous AI research, ethical frameworks, and skill development.
Countries like the United States and China, which also top the list, show a stronger presence in AI research, patents, and tech exports. India is expected to follow suit as initiatives like the National AI Mission and increased private investment continue to gain momentum.
As the global AI landscape evolves rapidly, India’s challenge will be to transform its demographic advantage into a technological leadership role.
